One Day School

One Day School

WHAT IS A ONE DAY SCHOOL?

A One Day School is an educational programme or learning space that a child attends for one day a week, whilst still attending their regular school. One Day Schools have a specific focus or purpose and offer specialised, child-centred support that addresses the evolving educational needs for individual children, their families and communities.

The focus of The Children’s Imagination Academy (CiA) is to support Children’s Wellbeing Education and Creative Mindset, and bring greater awareness to the importance of these areas for the future growth of our young in Aotearoa.

our mission

> to provide a sanctuary space for the wholistic growth, self-exploration, wellbeing education, creative exploration and empowerment of Children, where they have time to reflect, connect, and cultivate confidence to be caretakers of themselves, one another and our future world.

HOW TO ARRANGE WITH YOUR SCHOOL?

Communication is key! Talk to your school principal.
Once your child’s enrolment has been approved from our end, please let your school principal know that you are enrolling your child into the CiA One Day Programme (Mondays) for a term to give additional support for their wellbeing and development.

We support kids in learning how to rest, recharge, reflect and value themselves and others. We guide kids to explore their multi-faceted creative abilities through: our guest artist workshops, passion projects, games, group collaborations, nature experiences and unity initiatives.

Children are encouraged to learn a variety of mind-body and self-care practices and implement the daily routines that work best for them.

As a social enterprise there is no direct link with Ministry Of Education guidelines. The New Zealand Education Act section 25B Release from school states: The principal of a State school may if satisfied that a student will receive outside the school tuition acceptable to the principal, release the student from attendance at the school, for a period or periods agreed with a parent of that student, to receive the tuition.
Our programme will give children a tool box of skills in self-regulation, emotional literacy, confidence and calming techniques that will be complementary to their classroom learning.
There are other one day programmes running throughout New Zealand, mostly bush/ nature schools or “gifted and talented” programmes.
One day programmes are gaining in popularity and we are honoured to be the first to focus on mind-body care and creativity education.
Your Child’s health and safety is our priority.
Feel free to talk to our team about our programmes policies and procedures.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

x
Lou Buckingham Founder of the Children’s Imagination Academy

LOU BUCKINGHAM
Lou has long held a vision for a new learning space for kids in Aotearoa where they feel seen, heard and understood. A space where they receive an education that really helps them with everyday life and being strong in their own roots.

One in five young New Zealanders will be affected by anxiety or depression by the age of 18

www.mentalhealth.org.nz

Lou has background qualifications in Psychology Major (BA), Children’s Community Service Management (Dip), Therapeutic Bodywork (Shiatsu Practitioner) and is a Children’s Yoga Teacher (RKY) and discovered her passion for supporting children’s wellbeing and creativity whilst in the role of Director at Organ Factory Children’s Kids Club in Melbourne, Australia After learning about the Christchurch earthquakes and the statistics of kids anxiety and PTSD, she felt a great pull to come back to New Zealand to help children in need. Lou is the founder of Imagination Yoga and Imagination Dance and is a drama teacher at LAF (Lyttleton Arts Factory).

Emotional wellbeing education needs to be at the forefront for primary school age kids, as developmentally this is the best time to learn…..not later!

Lou is highly sensitive person, and after her extremely challenging adolescent years were she has spent her adult life learning how to manage raw emotions and influx of energies on a daily basis. Lou is pasioante about being part of education system change and showing kids a path of cultivating inner strength, creative thinking and prioritising their self care.

Parents keep saying “IF ONLY this opportunity had been available when I was a kid!”
